Where is Nagra?

Nagra is a village of Samrala tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Samrala, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samrala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033145, and it covers 284 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,292 people in Nagra: 671 men and 621 women, living in 254 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 284 hectares, the population density works out to about 455 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 925 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 110, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 418 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.21 per cent and women at 73.65 per cent. The census recorded 541 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 539 main workers, the largest group, 335, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 144 cultivators on their own land and 31 household industry workers. A further 2 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Nagra's land. Of the village's 284 hectares, 258 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (258 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 146 cultivators and 29 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Samrala, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Shamaspur, Dhindsa, Rajewal (Samrala) and Bamb.
