Hathan is a village of Malerkotla tehsil in Malerkotla district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Malerkotla, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malerkotla-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039570, and it covers 1,288 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,721 people in Hathan: 2,451 men and 2,270 women, living in 943 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 1,288 hectares, the population density works out to about 367 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 539, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,281 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.02 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.15 per cent and women at 64.43 per cent. The census recorded 1,440 workers, about 31 per cent of the village.
