Where is Lanjera?

Lanjera is a village of Dhar Kalan tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and is served by the Lanjera, Thala Lahri gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027386, and it covers 670 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,025 people in Lanjera: 527 men and 498 women, living in 207 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 670 hectares, the population density works out to about 153 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 945 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 138, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 86 people, about 8 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.17 per cent and women at 78.36 per cent. The census recorded 271 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 263 main workers, the largest group, 158, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 87 other workers in trade, transport and services and 15 cultivators on their own land. A further 8 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Lanjera's land. Of the village's 670 hectares, 175 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (175 hectares). About 98 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 15 cultivators and 159 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Pathankot, about 12 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Dhar Kalan, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Faugli Mawa, Lohrun, Dhar Khurd and Bakhatpur.
