Where is Lohrun?

Lohrun is a village in Dhar Kalan tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and is served by the Lehroon, Gahal , Garal gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027387, and it covers 984 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,047 people in Lohrun: 980 men and 1,067 women, living in 418 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 984 hectares, the population density works out to about 208 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1089 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 281, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 222 people, about 11 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.94 per cent and women at 74.25 per cent. The census recorded 554 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 360 main workers, the largest group, 157, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 104 cultivators on their own land and 89 agricultural labourers. A further 194 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Lohrun's land. Of the village's 984 hectares, 509 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (34 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (475 hectares). About 85 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 115 cultivators and 160 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Dhar Kalan, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Lanjera, Bakhatpur, Faugli Mawa and Rohg.
