Where is Ram Kalwan?

Ram Kalwan is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 23 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and is served by the Ram Kalvan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027707, and it covers 94 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 597 people in Ram Kalwan: 316 men and 281 women, living in 118 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 94 hectares, the population density works out to about 635 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 889 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 69, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 390 people, about 65 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.83 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.62 per cent and women at 62.3 per cent. The census recorded 225 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 158 main workers, the largest group, 102, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 31 agricultural labourers and 21 cultivators on their own land. A further 67 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Ram Kalwan's land. Of the village's 94 hectares, 84 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (84 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 21 cultivators and 65 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
