Where is Ratarwan?

Ratarwan is a village of Pathankot tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 23 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Narot Jaimal Singh community development block and is served by the Ratrawan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027705, and it covers 142 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 704 people in Ratarwan: 354 men and 350 women, living in 132 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 142 hectares, the population density works out to about 496 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 989 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 88, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 415 people, about 59 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.97 per cent and women at 64.21 per cent. The census recorded 200 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 134 main workers, the largest group, 91, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 21 agricultural labourers and 16 cultivators on their own land. A further 66 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (93 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (33 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
