Where is Chanauli?

Chanauli is a village of Anandpur Sahib tehsil in Rupnagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Anandpur Sahib, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurpur Bedi community development block and is served by the Bhatauli (Chanauli) gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038455, and it covers 263 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,562 people in Chanauli: 806 men and 756 women, living in 309 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 263 hectares, the population density works out to about 594 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 938 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 151, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 291 people, about 19 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.79 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.9 per cent and women at 73.41 per cent. The census recorded 603 workers, about 39 per cent of the village. Of the 337 main workers, the largest group, 233, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 73 cultivators on their own land and 20 agricultural labourers. A further 266 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chanauli's land. Of the village's 263 hectares, 202 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 197 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (197 hectares). About 54 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 111 cultivators and 56 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
