Where is Ghanauri Kalan?

Ghanauri Kalan is a village of Dhuri tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dhuri, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sherpur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039615, and it covers 1,696 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 5,799 people in Ghanauri Kalan: 3,068 men and 2,731 women, living in 1,126 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 1,696 hectares, the population density works out to about 342 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 583, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,812 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.19 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.3 per cent and women at 64.6 per cent. The census recorded 2,600 workers, about 45 per cent of the village. Of the 2,363 main workers, the largest group, 1,365, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 789 cultivators on their own land and 174 agricultural labourers. A further 237 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
