Where is Andheri?

Andheri is a village in Kharar tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039031, and it covers 98 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 452 people in Andheri: 250 men and 202 women, living in 91 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 98 hectares, the population density works out to about 461 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 808 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 35, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 177 people, about 39 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.73 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.51 per cent and women at 82.8 per cent. The census recorded 292 workers, about 65 per cent of the village. Of the 273 main workers, the largest group, 119, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 85 household industry workers and 66 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Andheri's land. Of the village's 98 hectares, 82 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 61 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (61 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 121 cultivators and 4 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Kharar, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Baraudi, Fatehgarh, Nangal and Jhingrah.
