Where is Bhagsi?

Bhagsi is a village of Dera Bassi tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dera Bassi, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dera Bassi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039302, and it covers 179 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,008 people in Bhagsi: 536 men and 472 women, living in 168 households, an average of about 6.0 people per household. Spread over its 179 hectares, the population density works out to about 563 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 881 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 123, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 99 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.02 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.74 per cent and women at 73.57 per cent. The census recorded 376 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 277 main workers, the largest group, 122, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 109 cultivators on their own land and 26 agricultural labourers. A further 99 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (167 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 113 cultivators and 34 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Dera Bassi, the tehsil headquarters, and Mohali, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bhukhri, Sangaundh, Haripur and Samgauli.
