Where is Chhokran?

Chhokran is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rahon, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Chokran gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032310, and it covers 153 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 844 people in Chhokran: 409 men and 435 women, living in 209 households, an average of about 4.0 people per household. Spread over its 153 hectares, the population density works out to about 552 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1064 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 100, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 218 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.05 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.44 per cent and women at 71.96 per cent. Irrigation came mainly from canals (2 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (99 hectares). About 52 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
