Where is Shahpur?

Shahpur is a village of Nawanshahr tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nawansahar, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nawanshahr community development block and is served by the Shah Pur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032330, and it covers 113 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 684 people in Shahpur: 351 men and 333 women, living in 136 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 113 hectares, the population density works out to about 605 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 949 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 49, about 7 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 272 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.88 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.08 per cent and women at 78.39 per cent. The census recorded 303 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 240 main workers, the largest group, 156, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 45 agricultural labourers and 39 cultivators on their own land. A further 63 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (95 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
