Where is Sialkot?

Sialkot stands in the northeast of Punjab, Pakistan, at about 32.49 degrees north and 74.53 degrees east, not far from the border with Jammu. It is the capital of Sialkot district, and its boundaries join Jammu in the northeast, Narowal in the southeast, Gujranwala in the southwest and Gujrat in the northwest. The old city sits at the historic core, while the colonial-era cantonment with its wide streets and large lawns lies to the north. Sialkot is the 12th most populous city of Pakistan and the 7th largest of Punjab, with 911,817 residents in the 2023 census.

History: from Sagala to the City of Iqbal

Sialkot is one of the oldest cities in South Asia. It is believed to stand on Sagala, the capital of the Madra kingdom that Alexander the Great captured in 326 BCE, and it later became the capital of the Indo-Greek king Menander I in the 2nd century BCE, when it prospered as a centre of trade and Buddhist thought. The Chinese traveller Xuanzang passed through in 633 CE, and in the early 15th century the city was the capital of the Punjabi ruler Jasrat Khokhar.

Under the Mughals, Sialkot grew as a centre of learning and craft. Papermakers from Kashmir settled here in Akbar's time and the city became famous for its brilliant white Hariri paper, while its metalworkers supplied weaponry to the imperial court. Under Aurangzeb, Sialkot was known as a great centre of Islamic scholarship and thought, and in the 16th and 17th centuries the scholar Abdul Hakim Sialkoti taught at the imperial madrassa. According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak visited the city in the early 16th century, an event now commemorated by Gurdwara Beri Sahib.

Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire captured Sialkot in 1808, and the British took it after the Battle of Gujrat in February 1849. In 1877 the poet-philosopher Allama Iqbal was born here; his house, Iqbal Manzil, is now a national heritage site. During the 1965 war, the Indian Army attacked in the Sialkot sector and the battle of Chawinda nearby was among the most intense armoured battles since the Second World War. In 1966 the government of Pakistan awarded the Hilal-i-Istaqlal to the citizens of Sialkot, Lahore and Sargodha for their courage in that war.

The world's sports goods workshop

Sialkot's modern fame comes from its factories. During the colonial era, British India's first bagpipe works opened in the city, and by the 1890s it had become a centre of metalwork. Surgical instruments were being made here for use across British India by the 1920s, and nearby timber reserves helped it grow into a centre of sports goods for British troops. The city's industries were built through private investment, not government funding, and the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry is respected around the world for its entrepreneurship.

Today Sialkot is the world's largest producer of hand-sewn footballs, with local factories making 40 to 60 million footballs a year, roughly 70% of world production. It is Pakistan's largest export-oriented city after Karachi, and its surgical instruments, leather goods, gloves and musical instruments reach more than 200 countries. After an outcry in 1997, the industry adopted the Atlanta Agreement to ban child labour in football stitching.

Places of interest

Iqbal Manzil, the birthplace of Allama Iqbal, draws scholars, poets and students from across the country. The old Sialkot Fort, repaired over the centuries by rulers from Muhammad of Ghor to Akbar's governor Raja Man Singh, still watches over the old city. The Clock Tower at Iqbal Square is the city's best-known modern landmark, and the 13th-century shrine of Imam Ali-ul-Haq, the city's most revered Sufi warrior-saint, draws devotees who revere him as a martyr. The colonial cantonment keeps its wide avenues and large lawns, and Sialkot International Airport, Pakistan's first privately owned public airport, lies 14 km west of the city.

Notable people

Allama Iqbal, the philosopher-poet who is credited with inspiring the Pakistan Movement and is honoured as Pakistan's national poet, was born in Sialkot in 1877. The city calls itself the City of Iqbal in his honour.

Getting there

Sialkot International Airport connects the city to the Gulf, Europe and domestic destinations. The Sialkot-Lahore motorway links it to the provincial capital, and rail services connect it to the wider Punjab network. Most visitors arrive by road from Lahore, Gujranwala or the nearby cities of the Golden Triangle.

Sialkot today

Sialkot remains a model of private-sector-led industry in Pakistan, with a per-capita income ranked among the highest in the country. Its people are known for their hospitality, hard work and strong community spirit, and its food streets, cricket and football culture keep its Punjabi identity alive alongside the factories that made it famous around the world.
