Where is Kairon?

Kairon is a village of Patti tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Patti, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Patti community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038216, and it covers 1,611 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,533 people in Kairon: 3,450 men and 3,083 women, living in 1,160 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 1,611 hectares, the population density works out to about 406 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 894 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 726, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,077 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.83 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.21 per cent and women at 60.8 per cent. The census recorded 2,052 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 1,556 main workers, the largest group, 710, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 430 agricultural labourers and 385 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 496 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
