The mandirs of Pakistani Punjab covered by Jugti are anchored by the Katas Raj Temples in Chakwal district, a complex of twelve Hindu temples around a sacred pond in the Salt Range, built under the Hindu Shahis from the 7th to the 10th century. The temples are considered the second most sacred site in the historic Punjab region. This guide places Katas Raj in the shared temple heritage of the whole Punjab and of Pakistan.

West of the border that divided Punjab in 1947, the province's Hindu temples are few, old, and layered with the region's whole history. Jugti's guide to the mandirs of Pakistani Punjab is anchored by one great complex: the Katas Raj Temples in Chakwal district, a group of stone shrines around a sacred pond in the Salt Range, raised under the Hindu Shahis and visited over the centuries by Chinese monks, Guru Nanak and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This region guide explains what stands in Pakistani Punjab today, why Katas Raj matters so much, and how it connects to the wider Pakistan collection. It will grow as more of the province's shrines are verified and covered.
What is the most famous mandir in Pakistani Punjab?
The most famous mandir in Pakistani Punjab is the Katas Raj Temples complex near Choa Saidanshah in Chakwal district. The temples are considered the second most sacred site in the historic Punjab region, after the temple at Jwalamukhi in modern Himachal Pradesh. Twelve temples stand at the site, seven of them original, around a pond that Hindus regard as sacred and that tradition says formed from the tears of Shiva. For Pakistani Hindus, and for pilgrims who still travel from India when visas are issued, Katas Raj is the province's living temple heart.
Katas Raj: temples around a pond of tears
The Katas Raj Temples stand at about 2,000 feet in the Potohar plateau country, close to the Kallar Kahar interchange of the M2 motorway between Islamabad and Lahore. The oldest group, the Satgraha, is a cluster of seven ancient temples built from around the mid 7th to the 10th century, joined by five later medieval temples, the remains of a Buddhist stupa, and the fort and haveli of Hari Singh Nalwa, Ranjit Singh's general. Shiva is the principal deity, with temples of Ramachandra and Hanuman, and the great festival is Maha Shivaratri. Tradition places the Pandava brothers here during their exile, and tells the riddle contest of the Yaksha Prashna at this pond. After decades of neglect following Partition, Pakistan began restoration in 2006, and in May 2018 the Supreme Court ruled that nearby cement factories must take their water from elsewhere, protecting the sacred pond itself.
Beyond Katas: the older temple landscape
Katas Raj did not stand alone. The same Shahi dynasties that raised its temples also funded temple building across northern Punjab, at nearby Malot, Amb and Nandana among other sites, and about 100 kilometres by road from Katas stands the Tilla Jogian temple complex, another important Hindu pilgrimage destination in the Salt Range. Most of these places are ruins or quiet local shrines today rather than living pilgrimage centres, and Jugti lists in this guide only the shrines it has covered in full. They matter here as context: Katas Raj is the survivor of a whole sacred landscape, which is one reason its pond and temples draw the care they do.
A shared Punjab heritage
Pakistani Punjab's temples cannot be separated from the Punjab on the other side of the border. The 2023 census counted 249,716 Hindus in Pakistan's Punjab province, a small community in a province where their faith was once widespread, and shrines like Katas Raj are tended today as both places of worship and national heritage. The pattern echoes Jugti's guide to mandirs in Indian Punjab, where the goddess temples of Amritsar and Jalandhar stand in sacred tanks: on both sides, water sits at the centre of the shrine. Katas Raj belongs in the same reading journey as Pakistan's other great Hindu pilgrimage, the cave shrine of Hinglaj Mata in Balochistan, and both sit inside the country guide to mandirs in Pakistan.
Visiting mandirs in Pakistani Punjab
Katas Raj is reached by road from Kallar Kahar and Choa Saidanshah, and its busiest days fall around Maha Shivaratri, when Pakistani Hindu pilgrims gather and, in some years, groups from India join them: in 2025 Pakistan issued visas to 154 Indian Hindu pilgrims to visit the shrine. Outside festival days the complex is quiet, and a visitor sees the Salt Range valley much as travellers described it centuries ago. Because this guide lists only shrines Jugti has verified and covered in full, its list is short today and honest about it: one great complex, covered properly, rather than a long list of names without stories.
