ਭਾਬੀ (bhabhi) is your elder brother's wife. Welcomed with honour into the family, she becomes a sister, friend, and second mother to the younger siblings.
Meaning
ਭਾਬੀ (bhabhi) is the Punjabi word for your elder brother's wife — your sister-in-law on your brother's side. Strictly speaking, the term belongs to the elder brother's wife; the younger brother's wife may also be called bhabhi in everyday speech, but the classic bhabhi-devar (sister-in-law and husband's younger brother) relationship centres on the elder brother's marriage. The elder sister's husband, by contrast, is ਜੀਜਾ (jija) — a different word entirely.
When a bhabhi enters the household through marriage, she is received with ceremony and honour — she is the new bride, the one around whom the wedding's joy centred. For the husband's younger siblings, she arrives as a glamorous new figure: part sister, part friend, part second mother.
She is addressed as ਭਾਬੀ ਜੀ, though younger siblings often drop the ਜੀ as intimacy grows. The word is used with warmth in almost every context; it is rare to hear "bhabhi" said coldly.
Cultural context
The bhabhi holds one of the most affectionate places in Punjabi family lore. The relationship between a bhabhi and her ਦੇਵਰ (devar, husband's younger brother) is legendary for its playful warmth — folk songs tease about it, films romanticise it, and in real life it is usually a genuine friendship across a small age gap. The devar is his bhabhi's protector and errand-runner; she is his confidante and ally against his parents.
With the ਨਣਦ (nanad, husband's sister), the dynamic is more complex and more written about — a negotiation between two women who both belong to the same household, which Punjabi drama has mined for generations. But at its best, it becomes one of the family's closest bonds: the bhabhi who dresses her nanad for her wedding is a stock image of family love.
In the traditional household, the bhabhi gradually takes over domestic management from the dadi, becoming the home's new centre. Her arrival marks a generational shift, and how warmly she is woven into the family sets the tone of the household for decades.
