In short

Jatt is the name of Punjab’s great farming community — and in everyday speech, almost a synonym for the Punjabi farmer himself. The word carries pride, stubbornness, and a deep attachment to the land.

Meaning

ਜੱਟ (jatt) is the name of Punjab’s great agricultural community — the Jats, historically the landowning peasantry of the region. In everyday speech the word has broadened: a “jatt” is often simply a Punjabi farmer, or a Punjabi villager with the community’s famed attachment to the land. It is both an identity and, in modern pop culture, almost a synonym for the Punjabi countryman.

The word carries a charge of pride — and, depending on who says it, of stereotype. At its best it stands for hard work, hospitality, stubborn independence and love of the soil. At its most careless it is reduced to a caricature in songs and jokes. The community itself has largely embraced the name as a badge of honour.

Origin and etymology

The deep origins of the Jats are debated by historians, and no single account commands agreement. What is certain is that the community is attested in the medieval sources of north-western India as an agricultural people, and that by the early modern period Jats formed the backbone of Punjab’s village society — as cultivators, soldiers and, in time, rulers of small states.

Cultural context

Village Punjab was long organised around jatt landholding families: the well, the common lands, the panchayat, the festivals. Vaisakhi, the harvest festival, is in many ways the jatt’s festival — the celebration of the wheat harvest he has brought home. Military service, too, runs deep in the community’s traditions.

In the last few decades the word has travelled the world on Punjabi music. Bhangra and Punjabi pop turned “Jatt” into a global brand — sung with pride from Ludhiana to Toronto to London. Diaspora Punjabis who have never touched a plough still call themselves jatt, and mean by it a connection to village, family and land that distance has not broken.
