ਖੁਸ਼ੀ

Meaning

Khushi means happiness or joy. It can describe a moment's delight — good news, a wedding, a child's laughter — or a deeper, steadier contentment: the happiness of a family at peace, of honest work done well, of health and togetherness.

The word is used both for feeling and for occasion. A khushi can be a happy event itself, as when people say a wedding brought khushi to the whole village. In blessings, elders wish khushi on the young: may your life be filled with happiness.

Origin and etymology

Khushi comes from the Persian khushi (خوشی), from khush, meaning happy or pleasant. Like many Persian words in Punjabi, it arrived centuries ago and became fully at home — it is one of the most everyday words in the language.

The related word khush (happy) is also common in Punjabi, as in "khush rehna" — to stay happy.

Cultural context

Punjabis are often described as people who celebrate khushi loudly and share it widely. Weddings, births, harvests and festivals are occasions for collective joy, and the bhangra dance itself is an expression of khushi — energy and delight made visible.

At the same time, Punjabi wisdom holds khushi and gham (sorrow) as two sides of life, arriving in turn. Songs and sayings remind listeners to share happiness while it lasts and to remember that sorrow too shall pass.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ

ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਆਨੰਦ, ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੱਖ। ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਛੋਟੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ — ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਮਿਲਣੀ — ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ — ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਆਹ ਜਾਂ ਬੱਚੇ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ — ਦੋਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਰਲ-ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮਨਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਵਿਆਹਾਂ, ਤਿਉਹਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਢੀ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ 'ਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਨਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭੰਗੜਾ ਵੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਹੈ।

ਪਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ਮ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਪਹਿਲੂ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ — ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਵੰਡਣ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਧਦੀ ਹੈ।
