Laavan (ਲਾਵਾਂ) are the four hymns at the heart of the Anand Karaj, the Sikh wedding ceremony. Sung one by one as the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib, they turn a wedding into a shared spiritual journey, setting out how two people should build a life of faith, humility and peace together.
Meaning
A single hymn is a laav, and the four together are the laavan. They are not vows exchanged between the couple alone. Each hymn is first read and then sung, and while it is sung the couple, joined by a cloth, makes one slow round of the Guru Granth Sahib. Four hymns, four rounds, and the marriage is complete at the centre of the ceremony, with the Guru as witness and guide.
Where the laavan come from
The four hymns stand in the Guru Granth Sahib on Ang 773 to 774. They were composed by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru. The wider teaching behind them is often summed up in the ideal that husband and wife are not merely two people sitting together, but one soul in two bodies, a phrase linked to Guru Amar Das on Ang 788. That ideal shapes the whole ceremony: the couple walks as one, not as two separate parties.
The four rounds, step by step
The first laav begins married life on a path of righteousness. The couple is urged to turn away from wrongdoing and to remember Naam, the divine Name, in daily work and family duty. Peace, the hymn says, follows a clean and honest start.
In the second laav, the couple is led to meet the True Guru. A rightful fear of God pushes ego out of the soul, praise replaces pride, and the divine presence is felt within and around them. In the third laav, the heart fills with divine love in the company of the sangat, the holy congregation, as Gurbani is sung and Naam settles in the heart.
The fourth laav brings rest. The mind becomes peaceful, the couple accepts the divine Will as sweet, and lasting happiness is found in the Lord. Read together, the four rounds move from duty, through humility and love, to peace: a map for the years after the wedding day, not just for the day itself.
