Rona is the Punjabi verb "to cry" — tears of grief, and also of overwhelming joy.
Meaning
Rona means to cry or to weep. It is the verb of tears: the child's cry, the mourner's weeping, the sobs of parting. "Rona" names grief's most visible sign.
But Punjabi also cries with joy — "khushi naal rona" (to cry with happiness) at weddings, reunions and long-awaited good news. Tears, in this understanding, are the heart overflowing, whatever the cause.
Origin and etymology
Rona is an old verb of the region's speech for weeping. It belongs to the basic emotional vocabulary, the kind of word every language keeps from its earliest days.
Its relatives across the neighbouring languages weep in the same way.
Cultural context
Punjabi culture makes room for rona. At funerals, open weeping is natural and shared; at a daughter's vidai (farewell after the wedding), the whole family cries together — it is love, not weakness.
Folk songs give tears their dignity: the viraha songs of separation, the mother's lament, the lover's complaint. To have cried together is, in Punjabi feeling, to be bonded.
