Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted a cross-border narcotics smuggling network, arresting four people and recovering 36 kg of heroin, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Friday. One of those arrested is a juvenile. Police say the group had picked up a drone-smuggled consignment from near the India-Pakistan border in the Lopoke area and was on its way to hand it to another party when officers moved in.

How the consignment was intercepted

According to the DGP, CI Amritsar received specific intelligence that four associates of a foreign-based handler had retrieved a large consignment of heroin from the Lopoke border area and were expected to deliver it to another party somewhere on the Amritsar-Lopoke Road. Acting on the tip, police teams laid a trap and intercepted the four near the Bharatmala Highway bridge. Officers recovered 36 kg of heroin from their possession and impounded the two motorcycles they were riding.

Who was arrested

Police identified the three adults arrested as Sahil Singh, a resident of Ghanupur in Amritsar, and Paramjeet Singh and Kamalpal Singh, both residents of Rajasansi in Amritsar. The fourth person arrested is a juvenile, whose identity police have not disclosed. The DGP said Paramjeet Singh already faces three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Preliminary investigation suggests the four were acting on the instructions of a foreign-based handler who arranged the delivery of heroin consignments from across the border and passed them on through operatives in Punjab. Police described the seizures as allegations at this stage; the accused have not been tried in court.

Case registered, investigation continues

A case has been registered as FIR No. 72 dated 6 November 2026 under sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar. Police said the investigation will now work on the forward and backward linkages of the network to identify other people involved and trace how the consignment crossed the border.

Part of a wider crackdown on border smuggling

The seizure is the latest in a string of large heroin recoveries in the border district. A day earlier, Amritsar Rural Police announced the arrest of 16 people and the recovery of two Uzi sub-machine guns, five pistols, two hand grenades and 34 kg of heroin in a separate operation. Police say drone drops from across the border remain the main route for smuggling heroin into Punjab, and Counter Intelligence and the Special Task Force have stepped up operations along the border belt in recent months.
