Police in Jalandhar district have registered a case against unidentified persons after pro-Khalistan slogans were spray-painted on a wall in Dosanjh Kalan, the ancestral village of singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, reports said on Thursday, October 8. A video of the writing went viral, with some posts wrongly claiming it was on the singer's own house.
What happened in Dosanjh Kalan?
The house owner, a neighbour named Mukhtiar, said four or five men with covered faces came at about 1.30 am on Thursday and began writing on his wall with spray paint. He said he woke up to the smell of paint, scolded them, and they fled in a vehicle.
Reports say the wall carried "Khalistan Zindabad" and other slogans. Punjabi Jagran reported a claim that the writing referred to observing November 1 as a "Sikh genocide day" and to opposition to Dosanjh's upcoming shows. Police have not confirmed that, and no group has been named.
Was it Diljit Dosanjh's house?
No. The Jalandhar Times reported that the wall belongs to the neighbour and stands around 100 yards from the singer's family home. The house owner said the writers apparently mistook his house for Dosanjh's. Investigators have not confirmed any motive.
What are police doing?
DSP Bharat Masih reached the village with a police team, and a case has been registered against unidentified persons. ASI Harbhajan Singh told Punjabi Jagran that CCTV footage from the area will be checked to identify those involved and take legal action. The village panchayat had the slogans erased.
