The Election Commission of India on Thursday, October 15, 2026 ordered a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in 17 states and union territories, including Punjab, with January 1, 2027 as the qualifying date, according to ANI and PTI reports.

What is the schedule for Punjab voters?

Polling stations will be rationalised by November 2, 2026. The draft electoral rolls will be published on November 12, claims and objections can be filed until December 11, they will be disposed of by December 28, and the final rolls will be published on January 4, 2027.

The exercise is being carried out under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Its stated aim is to update the rolls, add eligible voters who were left out, and enrol young and first-time voters ahead of the next round of elections.

Why does it matter in Punjab?

Punjab is due to hold its Assembly election by early 2027, so the revised rolls will form the voter list for that contest. The order follows the Commission's September 29 instructions for a special drive to enrol eligible voters left out during earlier exercises.

The Commission said schedules for states where a Special Intensive Revision is ongoing or has recently concluded will be announced separately, as will the schedule for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, where local weather will be taken into account.
