The application was filed by Kulwant Singh, who sought to join a pending suo motu public interest litigation as an intervener. He argued that the allotment of the Chandigarh house had been cancelled on May 20, 2020, that the cancellation was never challenged, and that a former MLA's continued occupation broke the law on government accommodation.
What security assessment did the Administration cite?
The Administration told the court the house was originally allotted to Beant Singh's family and cancelled in 2020 after the Supreme Court's directions. After Tej Parkash Singh asked for the allotment to continue, the competent authority reconsidered. Its affidavit, dated October 6, referred to an assessment by a Joint Security Committee that listed continuing threats to the family, including alleged threats from extremist organisations, grenade attacks and other terror-related incidents, threat calls and hostile social media campaigns.
