The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday named Navanethem "Navi" Pillay the laureate of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, honouring the 85-year-old South African jurist of Indian Tamil origin for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The announcement was made in Oslo by committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes.

The committee said Pillay, who served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, had "with exceptional courage and integrity led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order," and had been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.

Pillay, born in Durban, South Africa, built her legal career under apartheid, defending activists who stood up against the regime, and went on to become the first Black woman appointed to South Africa's High Court.

A jurist shaped by apartheid

Pillay became a lawyer in 1967, at a time when racial discrimination shaped almost every aspect of life in South Africa. She later served as a judge — and for a time president — of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she presided over the landmark Akayesu ruling that recognized rape as an act of genocide. She also served as a judge of the International Criminal Court.

As the UN's top human rights official from 2008 to 2014, she was a vocal global advocate for marginalized populations and for accountability when governments or individuals committed serious abuses. She later co-founded Equality Now, an international organization campaigning for the rights of women and girls, and chaired the UN's commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory.

Why the committee chose her

In its announcement, the committee traced "a common thread" from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid figures to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of recent decades. Rather than honouring a single act, the prize recognizes decades of contribution to international justice.

The 2026 award comes in the prize's 125th anniversary year. The laureate receives 12 million Swedish kronor — roughly $1.2 million — in prize money. Last year's prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her struggle for a democratic transition in Venezuela.
