Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has stepped down as president of the Punjab Congress, ending a tenure that began in April 2022 after the party's defeat to AAP.

Party sources say the decision followed months of friction between Warring's camp and supporters of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi over control of the organisation ahead of the 2027 assembly polls.

The leadership tussle had already prompted the high command to replace Bhupesh Baghel with Sachin Pilot as the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab earlier in September.

Names doing the rounds for the next state chief include former minister Vijay Inder Singla, Jalandhar Cantonment MLA and ex-hockey captain Pargat Singh, and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. An announcement is expected within a day or two.
