Punjab 456: Saharan 161, Arora 107, Brar Takes Five

Punjab converted a strong first day into a commanding position on Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match against Chhattisgarh in New Chandigarh, piling up 456 in their first innings and then reducing the visitors to 72 for 5 by stumps. Captain Uday Saharan extended his overnight century to a career-best 161, Salil Arora completed his own hundred, and left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar claimed all five wickets to fall in Chhattisgarh's reply.

How did Punjab reach 456?

Resuming at 269 for 4, with Saharan unbeaten on 106, Punjab built their total around a fifth-wicket partnership of 191 runs between Saharan and Arora, according to Wisden's round-up of the day's play. Saharan's 161 was the defining innings of the match so far, turning his Day 1 rescue act, after Shubman Gill had fallen for 1, into a score that put the game firmly in Punjab's hands. Arora finished with 107, his second consecutive first-class hundred according to Cricbuzz, in a partnership that carried Punjab well past 400 before the innings closed at 456.

What did Harpreet Brar do with the ball?

Brar then dismantled the top of the Chhattisgarh innings almost single-handedly. He took five wickets for 21 runs, every wicket to fall on the day, as Chhattisgarh slid to 72 for 5 at the close. The visitors trail Punjab's first-innings total by 384 runs with five wickets in hand, and face a long fight on Day 3 simply to avoid the follow-on and keep the match alive. For Brar, better known nationally for his white-ball work in the IPL, the haul was a reminder of his red-ball value to his state side.

What does it mean for the match?

Punjab took three points from their drawn opener against Assam, and a first-innings lead here is now close to certain. The realistic question for the remaining two days is whether Punjab can force an outright win and the bonus points that come with it. Much will depend on how quickly Brar and the rest of the attack can finish the Chhattisgarh innings on Day 3, and whether the New Chandigarh pitch, which has so far rewarded patient batting, begins to offer more turn for the spinners. The match, Punjab's second of the 2026-27 Ranji season, runs from October 18 to 21.

For Saharan, the innings continues a rise that has made the young captain one of the most watched batters in domestic cricket, leading his state side in a match where India's Test and ODI captain Gill played under him. Jugti covered Day 1, when Saharan's unbeaten 106 rescued Punjab at 269 for 4 after Gill's early dismissal, and will follow the match through to its result.

What was the score at stumps on Day 2?

Punjab made 456 in their first innings. Chhattisgarh were 72 for 5 in reply, trailing by 384 runs.

Who were Punjab's standout performers?

Uday Saharan scored a career-best 161, Salil Arora made 107 in a 191-run fifth-wicket stand, and Harpreet Brar took 5 for 21.
