Jagsher Singh Khangurra, a 17-year-old from Nabha in Punjab, returned home to a grand welcome at Mohali airport on Sunday night after winning a bronze medal in boys' singles at the BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

He was the only Indian to win a medal at the championships, according to Punjab MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who led the reception.

Seeded 14th, Jagsher beat Chinese Taipei's Jhuang Yuan-Syue 6-15, 17-15, 15-12 in the quarter-finals after losing the opening game, a result that guaranteed him a medal because losing semi-finalists get bronze, as per a DNP India report. On Friday, October 16, he lost the semi-final to Indonesia's Radithya Bayu Wardhana 6-15, 15-13, 3-15. Wardhana went on to win the title, with Xinhua reporting that Jagsher shared bronze with France's Mady Sow.
