Mohammed Shami Retires From Test Cricket

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing down the curtain on a 13-year career in the longest format that made him one of the country's most reliable pace bowlers.

Thirteen years to the day

Shami shared the news in an emotional video and message on Instagram late on Friday, exactly 13 years after he made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on 6 November 2013. 'Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am announcing my retirement from Test cricket,' he wrote. 'I am bidding farewell to the white jersey, but never to the memories associated with it.'

The timing was deliberate. Shami had been left out of India's Test plans for more than two years, and the selectors did not pick him for the two-match series in New Zealand starting on 19 November. Rather than wait for a recall that was not coming, the 36-year-old chose to close the chapter himself, on the anniversary of the day it began.

The numbers

Shami finishes with 229 wickets in 64 Tests at an average of 27.71, with six five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6 for 56. He retires as India's sixth-highest wicket-taking fast bowler, and much of his reputation was built away from home: 145 of his wickets came in 41 Tests overseas, where his upright seam and late movement made him a threat on any surface.

His finest hour in white-ball cricket came at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he took 24 wickets and finished as the tournament's leading wicket-taker. In all, he has 206 wickets in 108 one-day internationals.

A career interrupted

Shami's last Test was the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. After the 2023 World Cup he underwent ankle surgery, and injuries kept him out of the side for a long spell. He returned in January 2025 and played the Champions Trophy final in March that year, his last appearance for India in any format.

He has kept playing domestic cricket for Bengal, taking 14 wickets in three matches in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, and was named in Bengal's squad for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Friday.

What comes next

Shami has not retired from international cricket. He remains available for one-day and Twenty20 selection, and the door stays open for a white-ball comeback ahead of the next World Cup cycle. Tributes poured in from former players and fans on Friday, with former head coach Ravi Shastri among those who said Shami deserved another chance in Tests.
