ਅਰਸ਼ਦ ਨਦੀਮ: ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਨੇਜ਼ਾਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਚੈਂਪੀਅਨ

Arshad Nadeem is a javelin thrower from Mian Channu in Punjab, Pakistan, who won the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics with an Olympic record throw of 92.97 metres. He is the first Pakistani to win an Olympic medal in athletics, the first Pakistani athlete to win an individual Olympic gold, and the first South Asian javelin thrower to pass 90 metres. His rise from training in his home courtyard to the top of the Olympic podium is one of the most remarkable stories in Punjab sport.

A multi-sport schoolboy in Mian Channu

Arshad Nadeem was born on 2 January 1997 in Mian Channu, in Khanewal district, into a Punjabi Rajput family. He is the third oldest of eight siblings, and his father is Muhammad Ashraf. At school he played almost everything: cricket, badminton, football and athletics, and he played district-level tape-ball cricket. In grade seven, coach Rasheed Ahmad Saqi spotted him at an athletics competition and began training him. He tried shot put and discus before settling on the javelin, which he first picked up in 2015 and later called the best thing that happened to him. Gold medals at Punjab Youth Festivals brought offers from the athletics sections of the Pakistan Army, the Air Force and WAPDA, and his father persuaded him to take the javelin seriously.

Records on a shoestring

Arshad won bronze at the 2016 South Asian Games with a national record of 78.33 metres, and a World Athletics scholarship let him train at the high performance centre in Mauritius. In 2018 he took bronze at the Asian Games in Jakarta with 80.75 metres, Pakistan's first athletics medal at the Asian Games in 24 years. Gold at the 2019 South Asian Games, with a games record of 86.29 metres, booked his place at the Tokyo Olympics. He reached Tokyo having trained in his home's courtyard and on the streets, and has spoken openly about receiving no financial assistance from the government after qualifying and about how hard life is for Pakistani sportspeople outside cricket. In Tokyo he finished fifth, the first Pakistani track and field athlete to qualify directly for the Olympics under modern entry standards.

He threw 92.97 metres. Before Paris, the breakthroughs kept coming: fifth at the 2022 World Championships, the first Pakistani to reach a World Championships final in any event, then gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with 90.18 metres despite injury, the first South Asian thrower past 90 metres and Pakistan's first Commonwealth athletics gold since 1962. In 2023 he won silver at the World Championships in Budapest, Pakistan's first medal at that event. In the Paris Olympic final on 8 August 2024, his second throw of 92.97 metres broke the Olympic record of 90.57 metres set in 2008, and he passed 90 metres again with his final throw. It was Pakistan's first Olympic medal since 1992 and its first Olympic gold since 1984.

Injuries, comebacks and what came next

Much of Arshad's career has been a fight against injury as well as opponents. He hurt his back at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, had treatment on his elbow and knee in England in late 2022, missed the 2023 Asian Championships with a knee injury, and was sidelined from the 2022 Asian Games by the same problem. He returned through the Paris Diamond League in July 2024, the first Pakistani to compete at a Diamond League meeting, weeks before winning Olympic gold. In May 2025 he won gold at the Asian Championships in South Korea, the first Pakistani to win that title since 1973, then had calf surgery in Cambridge before competing at the World Championships in Tokyo. He represents WAPDA in Pakistan's National Games and holds the national honours Pride of Performance and Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

In November 2025 he defended his title at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, winning gold with 83.05 metres, the only thrower in the final to pass 80 metres, while his compatriot Muhammad Yasir took silver to complete a Pakistan one-two. It was the latest chapter in a career built with very little of the support system that athletes in richer sporting nations take for granted: for years his training facilities were a courtyard, local grounds and the equipment he could gather himself. That background is why his Olympic title is celebrated in Pakistan not only as a sporting win but as proof of what a small-town athlete from Punjab can do.
