Tajinderpal Singh Toor is an Indian shot putter from Khosa Pando village in Moga district, Punjab, born on 13 November 1994. He won Asian Games gold at Jakarta in 2018 and Hangzhou in 2023, holds the Indian record of 21.77 metres, competed at two Olympics, and added Asian Games silver at Aichi-Nagoya in 2026.
Toor was born into a farming family in Khosa Pando, a village in the Malwa region of Punjab. As a boy he wanted to play cricket, but his father, Karam Singh, saw his build and strength and steered him towards shot put instead. That family decision shaped everything that followed, and his father remained the central figure in his early career.
He completed a Bachelor of Physical Education at the Malwa College of Physical Education in Bathinda. In 2015 he joined the Indian Navy under the sports quota and served as a chief petty officer, a post that gave him the structure and support to train and compete internationally. He stands 1.92 metres tall, a frame well suited to the throwing circle. His long-time coach is Mohinder Singh Dhillon, under whom he trained at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
Rise to Asian champion
Toor made his international debut at the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, finishing fifth with 19.24 metres. Two years later he announced himself in Asia: at the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar he took silver with 19.77 metres, missing gold by only three centimetres, and he added silver at the Asian Indoor Games in Ashgabat with 19.26 metres. Silver followed again at the 2018 Asian Indoor Championships in Tehran, and at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games that year he placed eighth with 19.42 metres.
Then came Jakarta. At the 2018 Asian Games, Toor won gold with 20.75 metres on his fifth attempt, setting a new Games record and breaking the Indian record that had stood for six years. His first and fourth throws had each measured 19.96 metres before the big fifth effort settled the contest. Days later his father died after a long illness. When Toor won the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha with 20.22 metres, he dedicated the title to his father. He received the Arjuna Award in 2019.
The rest of 2019 showed his range. He finished 18th in qualifying at the World Championships in Doha with 20.43 metres, placed sixth at the Military World Games in Wuhan, and won the South Asian Games in Kathmandu with 20.03 metres, a new Games record for that event.
Records, injuries and the Olympics
In 2021 Toor pushed the Indian record to 21.49 metres at the Indian Grand Prix, passing an Asian record mark of 21.13 metres that had stood for 12 years, and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. In Tokyo he threw 19.99 metres with his first attempt while competing with an injury, finished 24th in qualifying among 31 athletes, and later had surgery after the Games.
Injury then cost him a full season. At the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade he fouled all three attempts and recorded no valid mark. Four days before his event at the World Championships in Eugene he suffered a groin injury, withdrew, and was also ruled out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
His answer came in 2023, the strongest year of his career. He opened it with gold at the Asian Indoor Championships in Astana with 19.49 metres. On 19 June 2023, at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar, he threw 21.77 metres, a new Indian record that also stood as the Asian record at the time. World Athletics still lists 21.77 metres, set that day, as his personal best and the national record. He followed it with Asian Championships gold in Bangkok with 20.23 metres.
Defending the Asian Games title
At the Hangzhou Asian Games in October 2023, Toor defended his title the hard way. He fouled his first two throws and was in danger of an early exit before a valid 19.51 metres kept him in the competition. He moved up with 20.06 metres, then, on his sixth and final throw, reached 20.36 metres to take gold ahead of Saudi Arabia's Mohamed Daouda Tolo. He became one of only four Indian shot putters to win gold at consecutive Asian Games.
In February 2024 he won the Asian Indoor Championships in Tehran with 19.72 metres, his second straight indoor continental title. That year he also left the Navy after nine years of service and was appointed a deputy superintendent of police in the Punjab Police. At the Paris Olympics in August 2024, his second Games, he managed one valid throw of 18.05 metres before fouling twice, finishing 29th in qualifying and missing the final. His Asian record was passed in June 2024 by Saudi Arabia's Mohamed Daouda Tolo.
2026 season and the chase for 22 metres
Toor remained a central figure in Indian athletics in 2026. He was named, alongside shooter Manu Bhaker, as one of India's two flagbearers for the opening ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Earlier that year he had taken silver at the Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin with 20.05 metres, an Indian indoor record, missing gold by just two centimetres. In Delhi he threw 21.03 metres, his first throw beyond 21 metres since 2023, and followed it with 20.72 metres in Ludhiana.
Injuries interrupted the run again. A groin problem affected him before the Inter-State Championships, and a grade one calf tear shortly before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games limited him to fifth place there with 20.27 metres. He told myKhel that for two to three months he had done no ground work at all and had not thrown for three to four weeks while rebuilding his fitness.
At the Asian Games final in Nagoya on 26 September 2026, Toor opened with 20.06 metres and improved to 20.64 metres on his fifth attempt, his best throw since the injury, to win silver. Iran's Mohammadreza Tayebise took gold with 20.81 metres, a Games record that replaced the 20.75 metre mark Toor had held for eight years. The medal made Toor a medallist at three straight Asian Games. Afterwards he set out the target that still drives him, telling myKhel he will keep competing until he throws 22 metres, a goal he has chased for six years.
