Milkha Singh (1929 to 2021), known as the Flying Sikh, was an Indian track and field sprinter from Punjab who became independent India's first Commonwealth Games athletics champion. Orphaned in Partition, he rose through the Indian Army to win four Asian Games golds and finish fourth in the 400 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Where was Milkha Singh born?

Milkha Singh was born on 20 November 1929 in Govindpura, a village about 10 kilometres from Muzaffargarh city in Punjab Province, British India, in what is now Pakistan. He was one of fifteen children in a Sikh farming family, and eight of his siblings died before Partition. Records of his birth date differ: 20 November 1929 is the date used in most accounts after his death, while other records give 1932 or 1935.

Early life: Partition and the road to Delhi

His childhood ended in the violence of Partition in 1947. During the attacks on his village, his parents and several of his brothers and sisters were killed, and the teenage Milkha witnessed the killings. He escaped, hid, and eventually reached Delhi by train, one of millions displaced by the division of Punjab between India and Pakistan.

In Delhi he lived for a time with a married sister, stayed at the Purana Qila refugee camp and at a resettlement colony in Shahdara, and was briefly held in Tihar jail for travelling on a train without a ticket; his sister sold jewellery to get him released. He later said he was drifting close to petty crime when his brother Malkhan persuaded him to try for the Indian Army instead.

The army years and a first Olympics

Milkha Singh joined the Indian Army in 1951, succeeding on his fourth attempt, and was stationed at the Electrical Mechanical Engineering Centre in Secunderabad. As a boy he had run the 10 kilometres to school and back each day, and the army spotted his speed at once: he was picked for special athletics training after finishing sixth in a compulsory cross-country run for new recruits. He later summed up what the army gave him: "I came from a remote village, I didn't know what running was, or the Olympics."

His first Olympics came at Melbourne in 1956, where he ran the 200 and 400 metres and went out in the heats. The trip still changed him. He met Charles Jenkins Sr., the American who won the 400 metres title at those Games, and learned training methods from him. Milkha returned home determined to reach that level. The army backed him, promoting him from sepoy to junior commissioned officer after his 1958 Asian Games success, and he rose in time to honorary captain.

1958: the year he conquered Asia and the Commonwealth

The breakthrough year was 1958. At the National Games in Cuttack he set Indian records in the 200 and 400 metres. At the Asian Games in Tokyo he won gold in both events, the first Indian to win the 400 metres title at the Asian Games. Months later, at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, he won the 440 yards in 46.6 seconds and became the first gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games from independent India. For a young country whose sporting fame rested on hockey, a track gold was something new, and Milkha remained the only Indian man to win an individual athletics gold at those Games until Vikas Gowda did so in 2014.

What happened in the Rome 1960 Olympic final?

In the Rome 1960 Olympic final, Milkha Singh finished fourth in the 400 metres, missing a medal by a fraction of a second in a photo finish. The road to Rome ran through Lahore. Earlier in 1960, persuaded by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to set aside his own memories of Partition, he travelled to Pakistan and beat the Pakistani champion Abdul Khaliq. Pakistan's president, General Ayub Khan, told him afterwards: "You didn't run today, you flew." From then on he was the Flying Sikh.

In Rome he entered the final as one of the favourites, having beaten every leading rival except Otis Davis of the United States. He led into the home straight but, by his own account, eased off around the 250 metre mark and looked round, a mistake he called his worst memory. Davis and Germany's Carl Kaufmann both finished in a world record 44.9 seconds, South Africa's Malcolm Spence took bronze in 45.5, and Singh was fourth in 45.6 seconds hand-timed, 45.73 on the electronic clock. All four men broke the old Olympic record. His time stood as the Indian national record for almost forty years, until Paramjit Singh ran 45.70 in 1998.

There was no collapse after Rome. At the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta he defended his 400 metres title and added gold in the 4 x 400 metres relay, taking his Asian Games tally to four gold medals. He went to a third Olympics at Tokyo in 1964, where in the event he contested only the 4 x 400 metres relay, the Indian team going out in the heats, and he retired from international athletics soon after.

Honours, family and later life

India honoured him early. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959, the country's fourth highest civilian honour, following his golden year of 1958. In 2001, when the government offered him the Arjuna Award, he declined it, arguing that the award was meant for young sportspersons and had been devalued, an offer he compared to a school certificate after a master's degree. After his running career he became Director of Sports in the Punjab Ministry of Education, a post he held until his retirement in 1998.

He had met Nirmal Kaur, a former captain of the Indian women's volleyball team, in Ceylon in 1955, and they married in 1962. They had three daughters and a son, Jeev Milkha Singh, who became one of India's leading professional golfers. In 1999 the couple adopted the seven-year-old son of Havildar Bikram Singh, who had been killed in the Battle of Tiger Hill during the Kargil War. Milkha donated all his medals to the nation; they were displayed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi and later moved to a sports museum in Patiala, where the shoes he wore in Rome are also kept.

In 2003 he founded the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust to help poor and needy sportspersons. With his daughter Sonia Sanwalka he wrote his autobiography, The Race of My Life, published in 2013. The same year the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and starring Farhan Akhtar, took his story to a new generation. He sold the film rights for a single rupee, on condition that a share of the profits went to his charitable trust.

Death and legacy

Milkha Singh tested positive for COVID-19 on 20 May 2021 and was admitted to hospital in Mohali later that month. His wife Nirmal died of the same illness on 13 June 2021, and he died in Chandigarh on 18 June 2021, five days after her, at the age of 91. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, calling him a colossal sportsperson who had captured the nation's imagination. Weeks later, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra dedicated his Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games to Singh.

In 2008 the journalist Rohit Brijnath described him as the finest athlete India has ever produced, and the Rome final, a race he did not even medal in, is still the most retold story in Indian athletics. A wax statue of him in his 1958 Commonwealth running pose was unveiled in Chandigarh in 2017. For Punjab, his meaning is simpler and deeper: a boy from Govindpura who lost everything in 1947 ran, quite literally, until the whole country knew his name.
