Shubman Gill: Fazilka to India Captain

Shubman Gill (born 8 September 1999) is an Indian cricketer from Fazilka district in Punjab who captains India in Test and one day international cricket and the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. A right handed top order batter, he is the youngest man to score a one day double century and, since September 2026, one of only two men with two of them.

Early life in Chak Jaimal Singh Wala and Mohali

Gill was born in Chak Jaimal Singh Wala, a village in ਫ਼ਾਜ਼ਿਲਕਾ district near the Pakistan border, into a Punjabi Sikh family. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, is a farmer who had wanted to play cricket himself. Gill picked up a bat at three, and his father took charge of his training, bowling hundreds of balls at him every day in the village.

In 2007 the family moved to Mohali, close to the Punjab Cricket Association stadium, so the boy could train at a higher level. The move was a large sacrifice for a farming family, and it set the pattern of his childhood: school fitted around practice, and practice rarely stopped. His older sister Shahneel is part of the close family circle that travelled with that decision.

The talent showed early and in public. At twelve he faced under 19 bowlers at a national pace camp and impressed former India bowler Karsan Ghavri, who pushed for his inclusion in Punjab's under 14 side. At fourteen he scored a double century on his Punjab under 16 debut in the Vijay Merchant Trophy, and in an inter district under 16 match against Amritsar he made 351, sharing a record opening stand of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh.

Punjab colours and the Under-19 World Cup

Gill made his List A debut for Punjab in February 2017 and scored 121 against Assam in his second match. His first class debut followed in the 2017 to 18 Ranji Trophy against Bengal, and in his second match he made 129 against Services. A maiden first class double century, 268 against Tamil Nadu, came in December 2018, and he finished that Ranji season as Punjab's leading scorer with 728 runs in five matches.

Between those domestic steps came the tournament that introduced him to the world. As vice captain of India's under 19 side at the 2018 World Cup in New Zealand, he scored 372 runs at an average of 124, including an unbeaten 102 in the semi final against Pakistan, and was named Player of the Tournament as India won the title. Coaches and former players praised not just the runs but the calm, upright method that produced them.

How did Shubman Gill become India captain?

He became India captain by stacking records until the selectors had little choice. His one day debut came against New Zealand at Hamilton on 31 January 2019, and his Test debut followed at Melbourne on 26 December 2020, where scores of 45 and 35 not out helped India win, before a fluent 91 at the Gabba set up one of India's most famous series victories.

His first Test century, 110 against Bangladesh, came in December 2022, weeks after a first one day century against Zimbabwe. On 18 January 2023 in Hyderabad he made 208 against New Zealand and became, at 23, the youngest double centurion in men's one day cricket. Days later he added an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in a T20 international, completing centuries in all three formats. During the 2023 World Cup, in which he scored 354 runs after missing the first two matches with dengue, he became the fastest player to 2,000 one day runs, in 38 innings.

Team honours followed the personal ones. He top scored in India's winning 2023 Asia Cup campaign with 302 runs, and at the 2025 Champions Trophy he was vice captain of the winning side, opening the tournament with an unbeaten 101 against Bangladesh. In May 2025, after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket, Gill was appointed Test captain. He marked his first match in charge, at Headingley, with 147.

The IPL years: Kolkata, then Gujarat

Gill's Indian Premier League career began with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. He was their leading scorer in both 2020 and 2021, and made a half century in the 2021 final, which Kolkata lost to Chennai. When Kolkata did not retain him, the new Gujarat Titans signed him before their first season.

Gujarat won the title in that first season, 2022, with Gill making 483 runs and top scoring in the final. In 2023 he produced one of the great IPL seasons: 890 runs, the Orange Cap, three centuries, and 129 in Qualifier 2, the highest score in an IPL playoff match. Gujarat lost that final to Chennai, and Gill was named the season's most valuable player. When Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai, Gill became Gujarat captain for 2024, and he has led the side since, taking them to the Eliminator in 2025 and to another final in 2026.

269 at Edgbaston and 223 not out at Guwahati

Two innings define his record book so far. At Edgbaston in July 2025, in only his second Test as captain, Gill made 269 and then 161 in the second innings. The 269 is the highest Test score by an Indian captain and the highest by an Asian captain outside the subcontinent, and his match total of 430 runs is the second highest in Test history, behind only Graham Gooch. Cricbuzz noted that he reached his double century with a control percentage of 95.2, the best recorded for an away double hundred in that period.

On 30 September 2026 at Guwahati he went further in the shorter game. Chasing 406 against West Indies, India won with eight wickets and 39 balls to spare, a national record successful chase, and Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, with 26 fours and eight sixes. Reported records from that innings include the fastest double century in men's one day cricket, in 117 balls, the highest score in a successful one day chase, and the highest one day score by an Indian captain. He shared an opening stand of 255 with Rohit Sharma, who made 101.

Those innings also explain why comparisons follow him. Like ਯੁਵਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘ and ਹਰਭਜਨ ਸਿੰਘ, Punjab's earlier match winners, Gill was marked out young and asked to carry expectation early. His answer has been volume: runs in every format, in home and away conditions, and now as the leader rather than the prospect.

Honours and playing style

Gill has been named ICC Men's Player of the Month five times, in January and September 2023, February and July 2025, and September 2026, the last award following his 333 runs in the first two one day matches against West Indies. No other male player has won the award as often. He was also named in the ICC one day team of the year for 2023.

His batting is built on timing, a high elbow and placement through the off side rather than raw power, which is why his technique has survived the move between formats better than most. Fans know him by the nickname Prince. Still in his twenties, and already captain of India in two formats and of Punjab when he plays domestic cricket, his legacy is still being written: the Fazilka boy whose father moved a household for his cricket now leads the side he grew up dreaming about.
