Babar Azam is a cricketer from Lahore, Punjab, widely rated among the finest batsmen of his generation and the most prolific run-scorer Pakistan has produced in modern limited-overs cricket. A former captain in all three formats, he has scored centuries around the world with a classical technique built on balance and timing, holds the record as the highest run-scorer in Twenty20 internationals, and was named the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.

Mohammad Babar Azam was born on 15 October 1994 into a family from the Walled City of Lahore. His father, Mohammad Azam Siddiqui, owned a small watch repair shop, and his mother was a housewife. He is the eldest of three siblings. His older first cousins Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal, both Pakistan internationals, inspired him to take up cricket. Before joining a cricket academy he was a ball boy at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore's main cricket ground, and his first coach was Rana Sadiq. He came through the Pakistan under-19 setup before breaking into senior cricket.

Three centuries in a row

Babar made his one-day international debut against Zimbabwe on 31 May 2015, scoring 54. He made his Twenty20 international debut against England in September 2016 and his Test debut against the West Indies in Dubai in October 2016, when he became the first player to score a fifty on Test debut in a day-night Test. His breakthrough came in the home series against the West Indies in 2016, when he scored three consecutive ODI centuries, 120, 123 and 117, a record 360 runs in a three-match series. In January 2017 he became, at that time, the joint-fastest batsman to 1,000 ODI runs and the fastest Pakistani to the mark. He was part of the Pakistan team that won the 2017 Champions Trophy, scoring 46 in the final against India, and was named Pakistan's ODI Player of the Year for 2017.

How did Babar Azam become Pakistan captain?

He rose through the leadership step by step. After serving as vice-captain, he was named Twenty20 captain in October 2019, and the one-day and Test captaincies followed. Under his captaincy Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they lost to England after he scored 53 in the semi-final win over New Zealand. Ricky Ponting, watching him in Australia, said he had a lot of class and could become one of the best batsmen in the world. Babar resigned the captaincy in all formats in November 2023 after a disappointing World Cup campaign, was reappointed limited-overs captain in March 2024, led Pakistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup, and resigned again in October 2024, saying he wanted to focus on his batting and manage his workload.

Records with the bat

Babar's numbers place him among the game's leading modern batsmen. In May 2023 he became the fastest batsman in ODI history to 5,000 runs, reaching the mark in 97 innings, and that month Pakistan rose to number one in the ODI rankings under his captaincy for the first time in 33 years. In August 2023 his 151 against Nepal made him the fastest player to 19 ODI centuries. In November 2025 he scored his 20th ODI century, equalling Saeed Anwar's Pakistan record. In Twenty20 internationals he passed Rohit Sharma in October 2025 to become the format's highest run-scorer, and he holds the joint record for most wins as a T20I captain, with 42. Wasim Akram has compared his batting to Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, and Ian Bishop has said he could become one of the greatest white-ball batsmen of all time.

Franchise and county cricket

At home Babar has played for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, captaining Karachi and finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer in 2020, when he was also player of the tournament, before moving to Peshawar Zalmi in 2023 as captain. In England he played for Somerset in the T20 Blast in 2019 and 2020 and was the competition's highest run-scorer in 2019, and he has also played franchise cricket in the Caribbean, Bangladesh and Australia. His home ground remains Lahore, and he wears number 56. He holds the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's highest civilian honours.
