Gurpreet Ghuggi (born 19 June 1971) is a Punjabi comedian and actor from Gurdaspur who rose from Jalandhar theatre and hit comedy videos to become a fixture of Punjabi cinema. He is best known for Carry On Jatta and for Ardaas, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics).

Gurpreet Ghuggi, born Gurpreet Singh Waraich on 19 June 1971 in Gurdaspur, is a Punjabi comedian and actor whose theatre work, hit comedy videos and film roles made him one of Punjab's best known performers. He is best known as Honey in Carry On Jatta and for his award winning lead role in Ardaas.

Gurpreet Singh Waraich was born on 19 June 1971 in Gurdaspur district, in the village of Khokhar Fojian, and moved with his family to Jalandhar as a child. Money was tight at home. As a teenager he worked as a daily wage clerk for a few rupees a day and handed his earnings to his father, while attending drama classes at Apeejay College of Fine Arts and rehearsing with the Rehnuma Drama Group. A scholarship took him to Doaba College in Jalandhar, which is affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, and there he won the Best Actor prize at the 1991 Guru Nanak Dev Youth Festival.
Theatre was his real training ground. He began acting in plays in the early 1990s and then moved to television with the comedy series Ronak Mela. He followed it with the soap opera Parchhaven, where, unusually for him, he played a serious role, and with his own shows Ghuggi Express and Ghuggi On Line.
The video years
Ghuggi became famous through his comedy videos. Ghuggi Junction (2003), Ghuggi Shoo Mantar (2004) and Ghuggi Khol Pitari (2005) were sold on cassette and CD across Punjab and the diaspora, and they made his name a household word before he ever carried a film. More titles followed, including Ghuggi De Barati, and the format suited him: short sketches built on characters every Punjabi viewer recognised from daily life.
Television took him national. His appearance on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, the stand up comedy contest on STAR One, introduced him to audiences across India. He later appeared with his wife Kuljeet Kaur on the reality show Hans Baliye, which the couple won, and he performed at live melas alongside singers such as Kamal Heer, Manmohan Waris and Jazzy B.
Film career
His first screen role was a small part as a travel agent in Jee Aayan Nu (2002), a film released direct to video. His first major film role came two years later as Patwari Jhilmil Singh in Asa Nu Maan Watna Da (2004), and through the 2000s he built a steady run of supporting roles in Punjabi films.
Carry On Jatta (2012), in which he played Honey, made him a film star, and he returned for Carry On Jatta 2 (2018) and Carry On Jatta 3 (2023). He became a fixture of Punjabi ensemble comedies, among them Bhaji in Problem, Jatt James Bond and the Manje Bistre series. In Hindi cinema he appeared in Namastey London (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), Race (2008), Cuttputlli (2022) and Dunki (2023), and he played Uncle Sammy in the Canadian film Breakaway (2011).
What is Gurpreet Ghuggi's most acclaimed role?
His most acclaimed role is Gurmukh Singh, the village schoolteacher known as Masterji, in Ardaas (2016), directed by Gippy Grewal. Playing the part with a restraint that surprised audiences who knew him only as a comic, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics). He returned to the character in Ardaas Karaan (2019) and again in Ardaas Sarbat De Bhalle Di (2024).
Serious roles have kept coming alongside the comedies. In 2025 he played Baba Gurdit Singh, the leader of the Komagata Maru voyage, in Guru Nanak Jahaz, and he also appeared in Akaal: The Unconquered the same year. Since 2020 he has hosted the talk show Hasdeyaan De Ghar Vasde on Zee Punjabi.

Ghuggi joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014 and was appointed convener of its Punjab unit on 4 September 2016, leading the party into the February 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. He contested the Batala seat himself and finished third. On 8 May 2017 the party replaced him as convener with Bhagwant Mann, his old contemporary from the theatre and comedy circuit, and two days later Ghuggi resigned from the party. He told reporters his objection was to the manner of his removal, not to Mann's appointment. He has held no party post since and has kept his focus on acting.
Personal life
Ghuggi is married to Kuljeet Kaur, and the couple have a son, Sukhan, and a daughter, Ramneek. Colleagues describe him as disciplined, and he has stayed close to his theatre roots throughout his film career.
Legacy
Few Punjabi performers have crossed as many formats as Ghuggi: street level theatre, television soaps, the video cassette boom, national reality television, multiplex comedy and a critics' award for a dramatic lead. His comedy works because it is grounded in people he has actually known, the Jalandhar clerk, the village patwari and the small town dreamer, and it carries affection rather than caricature. Ardaas showed that the same performer could also carry the weight of a serious film, and that double achievement is the core of his standing in Punjabi cinema.

ਘੁੱਗੀ 2014 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ 4 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2016 ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਕਾਈ ਦਾ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਫਰਵਰੀ 2017 ਦੀਆਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਬਟਾਲਾ ਸੀਟ ਤੋਂ ਲੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਰਹੇ। 8 ਮਈ 2017 ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਰੰਗਮੰਚ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਮੇਡੀ ਦੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਦਿਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਘੁੱਗੀ ਨੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਅਸਤੀਫ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਨਿਯੁਕਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਟਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਅਹੁਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਅਦਾਕਾਰੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
