Early life
Gurpreet Singh Waraich was born on 19 June 1971 in Gurdaspur, Punjab — in the village of Khokhar Fojian — and moved with his family to Jalandhar as a child. Money was tight; as a teenager he worked as a daily-wage clerk for a few rupees a day, handing his earnings to his father, while attending drama classes at Apeejay College of Fine Arts and rehearsing with the Rehnuma Drama Group. A scholarship took him to Doaba College, Jalandhar, where he won Best Actor at the 1991 Guru Nanak Dev Youth Festival.
Theatre was his university in the truest sense. He began acting in plays in the early 1990s and moved to television with the comedy series Ronak Mela, followed by the soap Parchhaven — where, unusually, he played a serious role.
Career
Ghuggi became famous through his comedy videos — Ghuggi Junction (2003), Ghuggi Shoo Mantar (2004), Ghuggi Khol Pitari (2005) — cassettes and CDs that sold across Punjab and the diaspora and made his name a household word before he ever headlined a film. His film debut came as the patwari Jhilmil Singh in Asa Nu Maan Watna Da (2004).
Carry On Jatta (2012) made him a film star, and he became a fixture of Punjabi ensemble comedies — Bhaji in Problem, Jatt James Bond, Manje Bistre, Muklawa — while also appearing in Hindi films including Singh Is Kinng (2008), Namastey London (2007) and, much later, Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki (2023). His most acclaimed performance came in Gippy Grewal's Ardaas (2015), where his restrained leading role as a teacher won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics).
What audiences love about Ghuggi is the lived-in quality of his comedy — the Jalandhar clerk, the village patwari, the small-town dreamer are all people he has known, and his performances carry the affection of recognition rather than the distance of caricature.
Major works
His comedy albums and videos of the 2000s — Ghuggi Junction, Ghuggi Shoo Mantar, Ghuggi De Barati — are the foundation of his fame. His key films include Carry On Jatta, Ardaas, Ardaas Karaan (2019), Manje Bistre and Shava Ni Girdhari Lal. He also participated in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, which gave him national recognition, and appeared with his wife Kuljeet Kaur on Hans Baliye, which they won.
In 2014 he joined the Aam Aadmi Party and served as its Punjab convener from September 2016 to May 2017, before quitting the party after being replaced by Bhagwant Maan — his old theatre collaborator.
Personal life
Ghuggi married Kuljeet Kaur, with whom he has a son, Sukhan, and a daughter, Ramneek. He is known in the industry for his discipline and for staying close to his theatre roots.
Legacy
Gurpreet Ghuggi's career runs from street-level theatre to video cassettes to multiplex stardom to a critically awarded dramatic lead — a wider arc than almost any Punjabi comic of his generation. He proved that the clown could also carry the weight of a film like Ardaas, and that a boy who once earned rupees a day could become the face of Punjabi comedy.
