Lilly Singh: Superwoman to Late Night

Lilly Singh is a Canadian comedian, author, actor and television host, born in Toronto to Punjabi Sikh immigrant parents from Hoshiarpur. She built one of the biggest audiences on early YouTube as Superwoman, wrote two books, and from 2019 to 2021 became the first person of Indian descent to host an American late night talk show.

Singh was born on 26 September 1988 in Scarborough, Toronto, and was raised there in a Sikh family. Her parents, Malvindar Kaur and Sukvindar Singh, are Punjabi immigrants from Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India. Her older sister, Tina, later became a creator herself, making family videos online.

She went to Mary Shadd Public School and then Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute, graduating in 2006. At York University in Toronto she studied psychology, finishing her Bachelor of Arts in 2010. The plan, encouraged by her parents, was graduate school. Instead, during a difficult period she has spoken about openly, she began making videos as an outlet, and that experiment became a career.

YouTube breakthrough

In October 2010 she launched a channel under the name IISuperwomanII, posting sketch comedy, rants and characters drawn from Punjabi family life, most famously her fictional parents Paramjeet and Manjeet, both played by Singh herself. A second channel for vlogs followed in December 2011. When the main channel passed 100,000 subscribers in 2012, she has said, she began treating it as a serious career and bought her first proper camera.

Growth after that was fast. Forbes placed her eighth on its list of top earning YouTube stars in 2015, third in 2016 with reported earnings of 7.5 million dollars, and tenth in 2018 with a reported 10.5 million dollars. She also appeared as a featured artist on Jassi Sidhu's Punjabi song Hipshaker in 2013 and rapped on Mauj Ki Malharein for the Bollywood film Gulaab Gang in 2014, early signs that her audience crossed the diaspora and India alike.

Books, tours and acting

In March 2015 she began a world tour, A Trip to Unicorn Island, taking her YouTube characters to stages in India, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK and the United States. The tour became her first feature film, released in February 2016, which also looked honestly at what sudden online fame was doing to her life.

Her first book, How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life, was released on 28 March 2017 and reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list. It won Best Non Fiction at the 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards, and she toured the world with it. A second book, Be a Triangle, followed on 5 April 2022, a shorter and more reflective work about building a stable inner life.

Acting work grew alongside the books. She voiced the miniature unicorns Bubbles and Misty in Ice Age: Collision Course in 2016, made a cameo in Bad Moms the same year, and played Raven, a tabloid blogger, in HBO's film of Fahrenheit 451. Since 2022 she has voiced Tiffany Fluffit in DreamWorks' The Bad Guys films. She moved to Los Angeles in December 2015 and, in April 2018, launched her own company, Unicorn Island Productions, based there.

A Little Late and later television

In March 2019 NBC announced that Singh would host a new late night show, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, taking the slot of Last Call with Carson Daly. The show premiered on 16 September 2019, with Singh as host and executive producer. Running to June 2021 over two seasons, it made her the first person of Indian descent to host an American late night talk show, a milestone reported worldwide.

Television kept her busy after it ended. She played Liv in the second season of the Hulu series Dollface, judged the second season of Canada's Got Talent from March 2022, starred in Disney's The Muppets Mayhem, and from June 2023 hosted CTV's primetime quiz show Battle of the Generations. In 2024 she produced, co wrote and starred in the film Doin' It, which premiered at South by Southwest and reached cinemas on 19 September 2025. In 2025 she launched Hyphen8, a media network for South Asian creators.

Advocacy and honours

Singh has used her audience for girls' and children's causes for most of her career. Her GirlLove campaign, begun to counter girl on girl bullying, grew into the Unicorn Island Fund, a non profit she created in 2022 to continue that work. UNICEF appointed her a Goodwill Ambassador in July 2017, announcing the role in New Delhi, and UNICEF's own profile notes her GirlLove work and her bestselling book. In 2024 she was appointed a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals advocate, with gender equality as her stated focus.

Her award shelf reflects both comedy and reach: an MTV Fandom Award, four Streamy Awards, two Teen Choice Awards and a People's Choice Award for Favorite YouTube Star in January 2017, among others. In October 2025 York University, her own university, gave her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. She addressed the Faculty of Health's Class of 2025 at the fall convocation, telling graduates, in York's own report of the speech, that failure is guidance rather than a setback.
