Dhariwal is a small mill town in Gurdaspur district, in Punjab's Majha region, about 13 km from Gurdaspur on the road to Batala. For more than a century it has been famous across north India for the New Egerton Woolen Mills, whose blankets and tweeds made the town's name a household word.

Why is Dhariwal famous?

Dhariwal is famous for the New Egerton Woolen Mills, the woolen mill that gave its name to one of north India's best-known blanket brands. The mill was established in 1880 and bought four years later by Sir Alexander MacRobert, the Scottish industrialist whose British India Corporation came to run it. By 1904 it employed 908 people, and the Imperial Gazetteer of India recorded that its woollens were famous throughout colonial India, then the only mills of their kind in Punjab. Generations of weavers, dyers, spinners and finishers passed through its gates, and a ‘Dhariwal’ label on a blanket was a promise of warmth that shoppers trusted.

Before the mill there was the canal. Dhariwal stands in the Upper Bari Doab, the plain between the Ravi and the Beas, watered by the first irrigation canal the British dug in Punjab. Henry Lawrence took up the Bari Doab Canal project in 1849 with money from British investors; work began in 1851 from a headworks at Madhopur near Pathankot, and despite punishing ground, a fall of 326 feet in the first twenty miles, the canal was finished in 1879. It turned gamble-on-rain farming into dependable wheat and paddy country, and Dhariwal grew within its command.

The mill followed in 1880, and the town grew up around it: workers’ colonies, dyeing sheds, and the bazaar that served them. Like the rest of Gurdaspur district, Dhariwal was reshaped by Partition in 1947, when families arriving from across the new border joined the mill’s workforce and the town’s lanes. The decades after independence were the mill’s heyday. In 1981 the British India Corporation was nationalised and taken over by the Government of India; it has not turned a profit since 1989. Production finally stopped in 2009, and in 2023 the Union Textiles Ministry cleared Rs 80.17 crore in long-overdue salaries and retirement dues for 1,101 corporation employees, including the men and women of the Dhariwal unit. The mill stands silent now, but its sheds and chimneys still shape the town’s skyline.

Geography & people

Dhariwal lies on the Gurdaspur–Batala highway, 13 km from the district headquarters, in the flat canal plain at about 253 metres above sea level. The Upper Bari Doab Canal passes the town, and the fields around it grow wheat in winter and paddy in summer. Dhariwal’s own railway station (DHW) sits on the Amritsar–Pathankot line, under the Firozpur division of Northern Railway.

The 2011 census counted 16,772 residents: 9,584 Hindus, 4,085 Sikhs and a sizeable Christian community of 3,001, a legacy, in part, of the mill’s old workforce, drawn from across the region. Punjabi is the language of daily life, and the town’s postal code is 143519. The climate is north-western India’s humid subtropical: roughly 925 mm of rain a year, seventy per cent of it in the June-to-September monsoon, winters of dense fog when daytime temperatures sink to single digits, and dust storms that sometimes usher in the summer heat.

Places of interest

The old woolen mill complex remains Dhariwal’s landmark, quiet now, but impossible to miss, a piece of industrial heritage from the days when Punjab’s mills clothed half of north India. The canal banks on the town’s edge are the favourite evening walk, and the grain market draws farmers from the surrounding villages. A short drive away are Batala, with its foundries and old gurdwaras, and historic Gurdaspur; to the north, in the same district, stands the holy town of Dera Baba Nanak on the Ravi, with its Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.

Getting there

By road, Dhariwal is on the Gurdaspur–Batala highway, about 13 km from Gurdaspur city and well served by buses. By rail, Dhariwal station (code DHW) is served by trains on the Amritsar–Pathankot line, including the Pathankot–Delhi Superfast. The nearest airport is at Pathankot, roughly 45 km away.

Dhariwal is a municipal council town, among the larger towns of Gurdaspur district. The mill that made it has been silent since 2009, and the town has settled into the rhythm of a district market town, grain trade, small workshops, and bazaars run by the families of old mill hands. Yet the name still carries weight: ‘Dhariwal’ remains a recognised woollen brand, and for Punjabis of a certain generation the word still means a heavy winter blanket, folded at the foot of the bed.
