A Hukamnama is the Guru's order: in daily use, the hymn read aloud when the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened at random after Ardas, the first hymn on the left hand page, received as guidance for the day and also called the Vak. Historically, hukamnamas were written edicts the Sikh Gurus sent to congregations, a tradition continued today by the jathedars of the five Takhts.

Every morning, in gurdwaras around the world, the same quiet moment arrives. Ardas is offered, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened at random, and the first hymn on the left hand page is read aloud to the congregation. That hymn is received as the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day, and for many Sikhs it sets the tone for everything that follows.
What is a Hukamnama?
Hukamnama is a compound of two words: hukam, meaning command or order, and namah, meaning statement or letter. In its daily sense, a Hukamnama is a hymn from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji given as an injunction or order to Sikhs. The verse taken in this ceremony is also called the Vak, the utterance, or simply the Hukam. Behind the daily practice stands a wider meaning of the word: hukam in Sikh teaching is also the divine order itself, the will within which everything happens, so the morning hymn is heard not as a random page but as guidance spoken into a particular day and a particular life.
Since Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared the Guru Granth Sahib Ji the eternal Guru of the Sikhs, the scripture does not only preserve the Gurus' words, it speaks with the Guru's authority. That is why the daily verse is treated as an order rather than a reading suggestion. A Sikh does not have to obey it as law in a legal sense, but receives it with the seriousness due to a teacher's instruction, reflects on it, and lets it frame the day's decisions, from a family question brought to the gurdwara to the private state of one person's mind.
How is the daily Hukamnama taken?
The order of the ceremony is simple and is followed with care. First Ardas, the prayer of petition, is offered. Then the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened at random, with reverence, and the first hymn that begins on the left hand page is read aloud. That hymn, read in full, is the Hukamnama. In many gurdwaras a short explanation, katha, follows, so the congregation hears not only the words but their meaning in context: which Guru or bhagat composed the hymn, what situation it speaks to, and how it applies to ordinary life.
A Hukamnama is not taken only in the morning congregation. Sikhs take a personal Hukamnama when they face a decision or a difficulty, at the start of an undertaking, and at ceremonies such as a marriage or the naming of a child. Community questions are also brought before the Guru in the same way. The method does not change: Ardas first, then the opened page, then the hymn received as the answer, whatever it happens to be. Accepting a hymn one did not choose is the point of the practice.
The Hukamnama at Harmandir Sahib
The best known Hukamnama in the world is the daily Hukamnama from Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, taken each morning after the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is carried into the sanctum. It is read aloud to the congregation there, printed and displayed, broadcast, and now shared online and by apps, so a Sikh in Toronto or Melbourne can begin the day with the same hymn as the sangat in Amritsar. An evening Hukamnama is also taken at Harmandir Sahib after Rehras Sahib. Each of the five Takhts and thousands of gurdwaras take their own daily Hukamnama in the same way, so the practice binds local congregations to one shared discipline rather than to one central text for the day.
Hukamnamas in history: the Gurus' written orders
Long before the word meant the daily verse, hukamnamas were letters. Historically they were epistles or edicts issued by the Sikh Gurus to sangats, congregations, across the Indian subcontinent. The tradition of issuing them began in the early seventeenth century, in the time of Guru Hargobind Ji, whose period holds the earliest surviving examples, although the scholar Gurinder Singh Mann has suggested the genre may reach back to the time of Guru Amar Das Ji on the evidence of a manuscript kept at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
The historical hukamnamas were addressed to specific families or congregations and covered the practical life of a growing Panth: standards of Sikh ethical conduct, the rehat, the organisation of the community, and requests for materials, such as gold or horses, that distant congregations were asked to bring or send for the community's needs. They opened with an invocation to Akal Purakh or Waheguru, named the congregation, its leaders and family heads, women among them on some surviving examples, and then gave the instruction. The families who received them preserved them with reverence as religious tokens.
In the time of Guru Gobind Singh Ji the hukamnamas were issued from Anandpur like royal decrees. The Guru dictated, a scribe wrote, some letters were beautifully illuminated, and each was given a serial number before it was sent. After 1708, hukamnamas were also issued by Mata Sahib Kaur Ji and Mata Sundari Ji, by Banda Singh Bahadur, and by the Takhts. Surviving collections, studied and published by Ganda Singh and Shamsher Singh Ashok in the late 1960s, are valued by historians because many letters are dated by their own scribes: they help fix the chronology of Sikh history, trace the spread of early Sikh communities, and show the development of Punjabi prose and the Gurmukhi script. Many originals held by the Sikh Reference Library in Amritsar were lost in the events of 1984, which makes the published collections more important still.
Who can issue a Hukamnama today?
The daily Vak needs no issuer: it is taken from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji itself, in any gurdwara, by the granthi in attendance. Edicts in the older, historical sense are a different matter. Today they are issued by the jathedars of the five Takhts, the thrones of Sikh temporal authority, on questions affecting the Panth as a whole or individual Sikhs, and they are regarded as the commands of the Guru and binding on those they address. Hukamnamas of this kind have taken the form of exhortations, commendations and prohibitions across Sikh history, including, in the nineteenth century, one that required Maharaja Ranjit Singh to submit to a public penalty to show repentance for a moral lapse.
How should a Hukamnama be understood?
A Hukamnama is read whole, not mined for a single line that suits the reader. The hymn's own context matters: its raag, its author, and the verses around the opening lines all shape its sense, which is why the katha that follows the reading in a gurdwara, and reliable published translations, are the normal way Sikhs interpret it. The same hymn can of course appear again on another day, since the opening is random; Sikhs receive that too without embarrassment, because the guidance is in the words, not in their novelty. Understood this way, the Hukamnama is the most democratic of Sikh practices: the Guru speaks once, the whole congregation hears the same words, and each person carries away the instruction they were ready to hear.
