Ask a Sikh what the faith asks of a person day to day, and the answer is very likely to be one word: seva. It is the volunteer in the langar kitchen at four in the morning, the teenager washing dishes, the elder cleaning shoes at the door, the truck driver who drops everything when a flood hits Punjab. Seva is service done for others with no bill attached, and Sikhs treat it not as charity handed down from above but as worship itself, performed with the hands.

What is seva?

Seva comes from the Sanskrit root sev, to serve, and in Sikh usage it means voluntary service done without any expectation of reward. The word carries a second meaning in the Gurus' writings: to worship, adore or pay homage through an act of love, and in Sikh practice the two meanings have merged. To serve people is to serve Waheguru, because the Divine is present in everyone served. The teaching is strict about the spirit of the act. Seva must be nishkam, without desire for anything back; nishkapat, without a hidden motive; and done with nimarta, humility. Service performed for show, or to buy status in the community, fails its own test.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji put the promise of it in a line every Sikh knows: Vich duniya sev kamaiye, ta dargah baisan paiye. In the midst of this world, do seva, and you will be given a place of honour in the court of the Lord. Seva is not an escape from the world. It is done in the middle of it, in kitchens, hospitals, roadsides and homes.

The three forms of seva

Sikh teaching names three forms, and counts all three equal. Tan is service of the body: manual work, cooking, cleaning, carrying, building. Man is service of the mind: learning in order to teach others, guiding, translating, solving problems for people who cannot solve them alone. Dhan is service through wealth: money, food, clothing and resources given where they are needed. A labourer with strong arms, a teacher with knowledge and a family with a surplus all hold one of the three in their hands, which is the point: nobody is too poor, and nobody is too grand, to serve.

Seva also stands between two companion teachings. Kirat karo means earning an honest living by one's own effort, and vand chhako means sharing what you have with those in need. Honest work produces the living; seva and sharing decide where the living goes. Together they describe a householder's faith, worked out at a desk, a plough or a stove rather than in withdrawal from the world.

How did the Gurus practise seva?

The Gurus served before they taught. At Kartarpur, Guru Nanak Dev Ji farmed his own fields and fed every traveller at his langar, sitting high and low together on the floor. Guru Angad Dev Ji served in that kitchen himself. The tradition's best loved example comes from the battlefield: Bhai Kanhaiya Ji, a disciple of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, carried water to the wounded where the fighting had been, and gave it to Sikh and opponent alike. Questioned, he answered in the spirit the story is always retold with: he saw no enemy on the field, only people. Seva, in that telling, does not check identity before it helps.

What does seva look like in a gurdwara?

A gurdwara runs on seva; there is almost no paid staff in its kitchen. Sevadars, the volunteers who perform seva, cook and serve the langar, wash the steel plates, sweep and mop the floors, look after the jora ghar where shoes are kept, drive elders home, and play kirtan for the congregation. At Sri Harmandir Sahib the scale is famous: tens of thousands eat daily, and every plate passes through volunteer hands. Visitors notice something else. The person serving them may be a surgeon or a student, a millionaire or a migrant worker; in the langar line the apron levels everyone, which is exactly what it is for.

What is kar seva?

Kar seva is seva with the hands, from kar, hands or work. Its volunteers, kar sevaks, take on the big physical tasks of the community: building and repairing gurdwaras, cleaning the sacred sarovars, restoring historic sites. In the great kar sevas at Amritsar, thousands have stood in lines passing baskets of silt out of the emptied Amrit Sarovar, work no contractor is hired for because the work itself is the offering. Honesty requires one caution: some kar seva renovation projects have been criticised for damaging old frescoes, inscriptions and historic fabric, a reminder that willing hands still need expert guidance when the heritage is irreplaceable.

Seva beyond the gurdwara

Seva does not stop at the gurdwara gate, because its object is not Sikhs but people. When disaster strikes, Sikh volunteers are routinely among the first on the ground: after the 2001 earthquake in Kutch, Gujarat, Sikh camps ran some of the largest free kitchens for the displaced, funded by voluntary contributions from Sikhs across India and serving everyone regardless of faith. The same pattern repeats at floods in Punjab, at langars run for the homeless in Canadian and British cities, and wherever a community kitchen can be opened. It is the practical meaning of the close of ਅਰਦਾਸ: sarbat da bhala, the welfare of all.

Can anyone do seva?

Yes. Seva asks for willingness, not initiation, membership or belief. A visitor to a gurdwara who helps wash dishes is doing seva; a neighbour of any faith who cooks for a family in mourning is doing seva. What makes the act Sikh seva is the inner condition the Gurus set: no expectation of return, no audience, and humility about the doing of it. The reward the tradition promises is not payment. It is the slow wearing away of haumai, the ego, which Sikh teaching names as the chief obstacle between a person and the Divine.
