What does chardi kala mean?

Chardi kala (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ, pronounced CHAR-dee KAH-laa) is the Punjabi phrase for an ever-rising spirit: a steady, hopeful state of mind that holds even in hardship. It rests on accepting life's ups and downs as God's will (bhana), and it is both one of Sikhism's core teachings and an everyday Punjabi way of saying someone is in good spirits.

Breaking the phrase down

The phrase has two parts. Chardi (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ) means rising or ascending, from the Punjabi verb charhna (ਚੜ੍ਹਨਾ), to climb or rise. Kala (ਕਲਾ) means spirit, energy or vigour. Together they describe a spirit that keeps climbing, one that does not sink when life gets hard.

Where the phrase comes from

Chardi kala is heard by almost every Sikh at the end of the Ardas, the standing prayer said at the close of services. The prayer ends with this line:

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ੥ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ੥

Through the Name of Nanak comes rising spirit; by Your will, may all be well. The line ties the rising spirit to remembrance of God (Naam) and pairs it with sarbat da bhala, the wish for the welfare of all. The Ardas then closes with the jaikara, the call of victory: Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal.

More than optimism

Chardi kala is often translated as high spirits or optimism, but it goes deeper than ordinary positivity. It is a state of mind with no room for fear, jealousy or enmity; instead the mind holds joy, patience and self-respect, grounded in trust in the Divine will (hukam).

Accepting bhana does not mean giving up. It means facing what comes without complaint and working through it. Sikhs remember Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who met his martyrdom in calm prayer, as the clearest example of this spirit.

How Punjabis use it today

Ask a Punjabi speaker how they are, and you may hear the smiling reply: Sab chardi kala, everything is in high spirits. As encouragement it is Chardi kala rakho (keep your spirits up); as a statement of faith it says trouble will pass. Many Sikhs also say Waheguru in both happy and sad times.

What does chardi kala mean in Punjabi?

Literally, ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ (chardi) means rising and ਕਲਾ (kala) means spirit, so the phrase means an ever-rising spirit: steady hope and courage that holds through hard times.

How do Punjabis use chardi kala in a sentence?

A common use is the reply to "How are you?": ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਂ, "By the Guru's grace, we are in high spirits."

Is chardi kala only a religious idea?

No. It is a core Sikh teaching rooted in the Ardas, but Punjabis of all backgrounds use it as everyday speech for courage, resilience and good spirits.
