A major political row has erupted in Punjab over the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) PCS Mains results, with the BJP, the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal all demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. The results of the Punjab State Civil Services Combined Competitive Examination (PSCSCCE) 2025 Mains were declared late on 4 November 2026, provisionally shortlisting 751 candidates for the interview stage against 331 advertised executive and allied administrative posts. Within a day, aspirants and opposition leaders flagged what they called striking anomalies in the roll-number-wise list.

What the aspirants flagged

Candidates pointed to three patterns in the published list. First, they said 86 shortlisted candidates fall into 26 groups of consecutive roll numbers, with groups of three, four and six sequential numbers. Second, they flagged an unusually high concentration of successful candidates from single examination rooms: at Centre No. 7, Room No. 8, as many as 11 out of 24 candidates reportedly cleared the exam, and at Centre No. 11 (Room 14) and Centre No. 4 (Room 19), 10 out of 24 candidates qualified in each room. Third, aspirants alleged that some roll numbers in the shortlist belonged to candidates who were marked absent or never appeared at the examination centres.

BJP seeks CBI probe and a stay

BJP MP Tarun Chugh has written to Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria seeking immediate intervention, a CBI investigation and a stay on the interview and document verification stages until the probe is complete. Chugh alleged that 24.21 per cent of the shortlisted candidates belonged to a single examination centre and questioned why 751 candidates were shortlisted when the norm is to call three times the number of advertised posts. He demanded a forensic and statistical audit of the answer scripts, evaluation records, CCTV footage and attendance registers, and the registration of a criminal case.

BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged at a Delhi press conference on Thursday that candidates whose roll numbers were not even registered to appear had been selected, and that about 25 per cent of the selected candidates came from a single centre in an AAP MLA's constituency. He accused the AAP government of protecting a paper leak mafia, a charge the ruling party has rejected. BJP leader Sunil Jakhar also demanded a CBI probe and compared the row with the NEET paper leak case.

Aspirants take the matter further

Candidates have submitted a memorandum to the President, the Prime Minister, the Punjab Chief Minister and the CBI, seeking an independent investigation into the selection pattern. They have indicated that they may approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court if their concerns are not addressed. The examination was last held in 2020, and the PPSC had not declared the Mains results for more than two years before this week's announcement.

AAP rejects the allegations

The Aam Aadmi Party has dismissed the allegations as baseless and fabricated, saying more than 75,000 government jobs have been given strictly on merit under the Bhagwant Mann government. The claims have not been independently established, and no conclusion about malpractice can be drawn from the roll-number patterns alone. The PPSC has not yet issued a detailed public response.

Why this matters

The PCS examination is Punjab's most sought-after route into the state civil services, and the Mains results decide who reaches the interview stage. With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the row has become a sharp political flashpoint. The Governor's office and the CBI have not yet announced any decision on the demands.
