Where is Kathigarh?

Kathigarh is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031274, and it covers 70 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 725 people in Kathigarh: 375 men and 350 women, living in 144 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 70 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,036 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 933 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 93, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 11 people, about 2 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.44 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.62 per cent and women at 82.08 per cent. The census recorded 220 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 220 main workers, the largest group, 166, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 29 agricultural labourers and 20 cultivators on their own land.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kathigarh's land. Of the village's 70 hectares, 51 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 48 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (48 hectares). About 19 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 20 cultivators and 29 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The directory recorded Mukerian, about 11 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Mukerian, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Repur, Gawal Chak Jassu, Lalota and Banbindra Ban.
