Where is Repur?

Repur is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031273, and it covers 229 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,443 people in Repur: 741 men and 702 women, living in 321 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 229 hectares, the population density works out to about 630 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 176, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 149 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.37 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.78 per cent and women at 75.8 per cent. The census recorded 446 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 399 main workers, the largest group, 306, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 70 agricultural labourers and 16 cultivators on their own land. A further 47 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Repur's land. Of the village's 229 hectares, 201 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 59 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (3 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (56 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 16 cultivators and 71 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
