Where is Lalota?

Lalota is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031272, and it covers 68 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 454 people in Lalota: 235 men and 219 women, living in 93 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 68 hectares, the population density works out to about 668 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 932 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 61, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 19 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.3 per cent and women at 76.63 per cent. The census recorded 143 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. A further 99 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (7 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (48 hectares). About 11 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
