Where is Manak Dheri?

Manak Dheri is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 30 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and is served by the Manak--Dheri gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031674, and it covers 203 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,476 people in Manak Dheri: 772 men and 704 women, living in 318 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 203 hectares, the population density works out to about 727 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 912 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 130, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 607 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 92.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 94.92 per cent and women at 89.03 per cent. The census recorded 488 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 460 main workers, the largest group, 139, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 130 agricultural labourers and 129 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 28 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Manak Dheri's land. Of the village's 203 hectares, 178 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 171 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (171 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. With 141 cultivators and 137 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
