Where is Sandhwal?

Sandhwal is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hazipur community development block and is served by the Sandhwal ,Kulian Lubana ,Sibochak gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031190, and it covers 810 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 5,306 people in Sandhwal: 2,737 men and 2,569 women, living in 1,063 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 810 hectares, the population density works out to about 655 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 939 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 618, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,010 people, about 19 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.81 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.25 per cent and women at 79.16 per cent. The census recorded 1,467 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 1,201 main workers, the largest group, 555, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 336 agricultural labourers and 295 cultivators on their own land.
