Where is Lakh Waryah?

Lakh Waryah is a village in Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil of Kapurthala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sultanpur Lodhi, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029435, and it covers 109 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 651 people in Lakh Waryah: 343 men and 308 women, living in 112 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 109 hectares, the population density works out to about 596 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 898 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 63, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 488 people, about 75 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.44 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.23 per cent and women at 56.88 per cent. The census recorded 196 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 169 main workers, the largest group, 107, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 46 cultivators on their own land and 15 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 27 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Lakh Waryah's land. Of the village's 109 hectares, 101 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (101 hectares). About 8 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 46 cultivators and 132 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
