Where is Malan?

Malan is a village in Dera Bassi tehsil of SAS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Puadh region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ambala, about 24 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dera Bassi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039273, and it covers 86 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 781 people in Malan: 419 men and 362 women, living in 138 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 86 hectares, the population density works out to about 908 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 864 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 68, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 191 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.8 per cent and women at 65.65 per cent. The census recorded 587 workers, about 75 per cent of the village. Of the 399 main workers, the largest group, 120, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 119 household industry workers and 86 agricultural labourers. A further 188 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Malan's land. Of the village's 86 hectares, 78 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (58 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (20 hectares). About 8 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 74 cultivators and 91 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
