Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Mingora is the only Sikh temple in the principal city of the Swat valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It serves a small, Pashto speaking Sikh community rooted in Swat and neighbouring Buner for generations. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee listed it among the country's operational gurdwaras in 2024, and its sangat still gathers for daily prayers and Gurpurabs.

Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Mingora is a working Sikh gurdwara in Mingora, the principal city of the Swat valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is the only Sikh temple in the city, the spiritual home of a small Pashto speaking Sikh community rooted in Swat and neighbouring Buner, and one of the twenty one operational gurdwaras the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee listed in 2024. It is included in our guide to Gurdwaras in Pakistan.
What is Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Mingora?
It is the valley's Singh Sabha: a congregational gurdwara where the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is installed, the sangat gathers morning and evening, and children learn the nitnem, the daily prayers. The gurdwara's own community page lists it open every day from early morning to evening and carries its daily Hukamnama, the verse read from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, alongside notices of Gurpurab gatherings through the year, among them the Gurpurab of Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji in August 2026 and the completion of an Akhand Path that June.
The Sikhs of Swat and Buner
Swat's Sikhs are not newcomers. The community's own account, written by local writer Homaish Sethi and carried on the gurdwara's page, puts the combined Hindu and Sikh population of Swat and Buner at about three thousand today, against more than seventy five thousand before Partition, when most families left. Those who stayed are native to the valley: their mother tongue is Pashto, and they know Gurmukhi through their faith. The same account names the valley's other gurdwaras at Khwaza Khela, Peer Baba, Dewana Baba and Jangai in Chamla, with Mingora's as the chief among them.
A 2005 study by Quaid-i-Azam University, cited in United Nations reporting, estimated about two thousand Sikhs in Swat. Pakistan's 2023 census counted 4,050 Sikhs in the whole of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 15,998 in Pakistan. Sethi's account stresses what visitors also find: the community is well educated, its women included, and it lives on terms of trust with its Muslim neighbours, joining their family and religious occasions as they join Sikh ones.
2009: the year of flight
In 2009 the war between the Taliban and the Pakistani state reached the Swat valley, and Mingora's Sikhs fled with their neighbours. United Nations reporting from May 2009 counted about two thousand Sikhs from Swat and Buner sheltering at Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hasan Abdal, among them 207 families from Buner and 96 families from Swat. Manjeet Singh, a 37 year old primary school teacher who was a caretaker of this Mingora temple, told reporters he had held on until a mortar fell a few yards from his house, and then decided the place was no longer safe for his children.
That the gurdwara is open and busy today is the second half of the story. As the valley stabilised, families returned to their homes and shops, and Singh Sabha Mingora resumed its daily pattern of prayer, teaching and festivals, which the community page still documents, Hukamnama by Hukamnama, into 2026.
Seva: the community at work
The Sikhs of Swat and Buner practise seva, selfless service, well beyond their own walls. When cloudburst floods devastated Buner in August 2025, Sikh volunteers were among the first responders in Pir Baba and the flooded bazaars: reporting from the valley records Sikh teams raising funds overnight, giving cash to families who lost homes and to shopkeepers who lost livelihoods, distributing medicines to some 1,800 patients and even cleaning mosques, with about 85 per cent of their aid reaching Muslim families. Local elders call it the fruit of centuries of shared life in the valley, and it is the same tradition this small gurdwara teaches.
How do you reach Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Mingora?
Mingora lies in the lower Swat valley and is reached by road through the Malakand hills from Peshawar and Islamabad. This is a local community gurdwara rather than a stop on the organised pilgrim jathas from India, and visitors are best advised to make contact in advance through the gurdwara's community page, and to follow local advice on travel in the valley. As at any gurdwara, visitors cover their heads, remove their shoes and wash before entering the prayer hall, and all are welcome at langar when it is served.
Why does this small gurdwara matter?
Because it carries a whole community's continuity. Of the more than one hundred and fifty historic gurdwaras of Pakistan, only twenty one were listed as operational in 2024, and this modest valley shrine is one of them: not a monument to a vanished community, but the living temple of one that stayed, speaks Pashto, teaches its children the nitnem, and serves its neighbours in every hardship. For Sikhs worldwide, Mingora is proof that the faith's map in Pakistan reaches far beyond Punjab.
